Sublate is a browser extension made by Clearbox. This page describes exactly what leaves your browser and why. The short version: the video never leaves your computer, subtitle text or a thin crop of the subtitle band is sent for translation, and we keep a count of minutes for billing, not what you watched.
No account
Sublate does not ask you to sign up. On first run the extension generates a random install token and stores it in Chrome's synced extension storage. The token is the only identifier we hold. It is not linked to your name, email or Google account unless you buy a plan, in which case Stripe gives us the email you used at checkout so we can honour the subscription.
What is sent to our service
- Subtitle text, when the video has a caption track or caption text on the page.
- A crop of the subtitle band, when subtitles are burned into the picture: a narrow strip of the frame containing the subtitle line, typically about 800 by 50 pixels. Never the full frame.
- The last few translated lines of the same scene, so the translation stays consistent.
- Seconds of video played since the previous request, for metering.
- Source and target language settings.
We do not receive the page address, the video title, your IP-based location beyond what any web request carries, your browsing history, or any other tab's content.
How it is processed
Our service forwards the text or crop to Anthropic's API to read and translate it, then returns the result. We do not store image crops. Subtitle text and its translations are kept in a shared cache keyed by an anonymous identifier of the programme (a hash of the page address, never the address itself) so that later viewers of the same programme get instant results; the cache holds no install token and nothing that identifies you. We record, per install token, the number of lines and seconds translated, the languages, the model's token counts and the response time, for billing and to keep the service healthy. Anthropic processes API inputs under its commercial terms and does not train on them.
Payments
Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see your card number. Stripe tells us which plan you bought, your checkout email and a subscription reference, which we store against your install token so the plan works on every Chrome you are signed into.
Bring your own key
If you enter your own Anthropic, Google Cloud Translation or DeepL key in the extension's options, requests go directly from your browser to that provider and nothing reaches our service.
Retention and deletion
Usage records are kept for 12 months for billing reconciliation. To delete everything we hold for your install, email us from the address you used at checkout, or send your install token (shown in the extension's options), and we remove the record within 30 days.
Children
Sublate is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
We will post any change here with a new date. Material changes will also be noted in the extension's release notes.
